Kennesaw State University Aspires to All-Steinway School

Steinway & Sons and Boston Pianos
From my earliest childhood, I was taught that Steinway made the best pianos in the world. My piano teacher kept a hallowed Steinway grand piano beneath a cover in her front room. She promised me that, one day when I had progressed far enough, I could play it. When that magic moment finally arrived, I felt transformed. In that instant, I knew without a doubt that I would be pianist. At every important junction in my life-auditioning for college scholarships, performing my master's concert, studying at the Mozarteum-a Steinway piano was my trusted collaborator. Today, that sacred Steinway from my childhood teacher's home now holds a place of honor in my own home.
When I was named the first Dean of the College of the Arts at Kennesaw State University, one of the first tasks on my list was to purchase a new Steinway piano for our Department of Music. Finances were not in our favor. Nevertheless, we managed to save a little money out of our budget toward that goal each year.
Meanwhile, we rented a Steinway piano several times a year for visiting guest artists and special events. When my colleague, David Watkins, an International Steinway Artist, and I traveled to New York to finally select our new instrument, we were delighted to meet Mr. Henry Steinway, who graciously offered to autograph the piano.
We brought the piano back to campus and held a two-day Steinway inaugural event with public performances and receptions. Our enthusiasm for the Steinway was mirrored within our community. Just a few weeks later, community donors helped us raise a record amount of money for our students. In addition to endowing several new scholarships, we were able to buy a second new Steinway that is now used by our students every day in their recitals and rehearsals.
With the help of our friends in the community, we hope to one day become an all-Steinway school.
